Mum spends the rest of the year looking after everyone else. For one Sunday, we look after her.
A red carpet is laid across the platform as our gleaming Pullman-style train draws in. Step aboard and the looking-after is ours: white linen, crystal, and a steward pouring the first Champagne at your table before the train has even pulled away.
Settle into a deep armchair and the countryside begins to slide by. Up in the kitchen carriage, our Director of Food and Beverage, Brian Clark, and his team are already at work. A Master Chef of Great Britain who has cooked in some of the world's finest restaurants, Brian builds the day around seven courses of British seasonal cooking, the ingredients sourced from across the country.
Strolling musicians play through lunch, sommelier-chosen wine arrives with the courses, and the afternoon is in no hurry. To finish: the award-winning Great British cheeseboard with a glass of port, petits fours, and a pot of Fortnum & Mason tea.
Flowers fade. A booked table is forgotten by Monday. A day like this is not. It is the most magnificent way we know to spend Mothering Sunday, with the one woman who has earned every course of it.
Long before it was Mother's Day, it was Mothering Sunday, the fourth Sunday of Lent. It was the one day mid-fast when the rules were relaxed, which earned it a second name: Refreshment Sunday. People returned to their "mother church", and domestic servants were given the day off to go home to their mothers, for many the only day all year the family sat down together.A long lunch with Mum, then, is not a modern idea. It is the oldest tradition of the day. We have simply added a train, a cheeseboard and a rather good wine list.
Discover our carefully crafted seasonal menu, showcasing fine British cuisine prepared fresh onboard by our expert chefs.

A very special day out, both festive and fabulous in equal measure measures. It’s 5 star luxury from the moment you step on board and the service is of the highest quality standard. Such a wonderful experience.
My friend and I had the best day again on the Northern Belle train. Such a beautiful carriage (Warwick) with amazing staff who looked after us all so well. The food was outstanding (Christmas dinner) from the canapés to the cheese board, as were the cocktails and range of wines. The entertainment was again brilliant and had the carriage singing or laughing or both! Highly recommend and will re-book again for next year.
I just wanted to write a short email to give fantastic feedback for Lucy, Glenn and Arwen on the Hull-Edinburgh trip today (9th November) - Harlech. All three of them were absolutely excellent and made this very first and very special trip excellent for me and my mum. Thank you so, so much. I cannot believe how tirelessly and diligently they all worked to resolve minor issues and they really do deserve heaps of praise. We've never travelled in this way or experienced this kind of service before.
I feel the need to contact you to express our sincere thanks to you, your booking teams, the staff on board and exceptional attentive service on board during our wonderful journey on Saturdays Settle Carlisle train experience We were booked on Belvoir carriage in seats 19 and 20. Treated to excellent service by Phil, Lucy and Tom during our journey They were pleasant, spent time talking to passengers, provided efficient professional service and ensured our experience on board went without a hitch Thank you Northern Belle for a wonderful day and now looking forward to our next trip to Torquay on 20th August
This was our third time onboard the Northern Belle and it was just as magical as ever. Having previously enjoyed Edinburgh at Christmas routes we opted for a summertime excursion as a pleasant change. The addition of a trip on the Dartmouth Steam Railway and Riverboat made for a great addition to the trip, especially with the hot and sunny weather we enjoyed amidst the lush landscape of the area. We all book for the opulence of the train and the exceptional food (huge thanks to the chef for the culinary delights we feasted on) but the heart of the experience truthfully is the wonderful staff who offer warm greetings and high attention to detail.
May I just take this opportunity to thank you and all your colleagues again for the most incredible experience on board The Northern Belle. It was a very special part of my 60th birthday celebrations and exceeded all of our expectations. The most amazing celebration and I am eternally grateful.
