Northern Belle Crest Logo

Travel on the Northern Belle luxury train to the Hardwick Estate, in the Derbyshire Dales, former home to the Countess of Shrewsbury and a National Trust treasure.

Enjoy a fine dining experience on the outward journey. Your elegant table is set with immaculate white linen and gleaming glassware. Liveried stewards serve you a delicious brunch and take care of your every need.

Sit back and relax, enjoying the ever-changing views through your picture window as the train wends her way across the British countryside.

Each carriage is named after a British stately home or castle and individually decorated. Look out for ceiling murals, mosaic floors and the marquetry handcrafted by the country’s top artisans.

Upon arrival at Chesterfield station you will be escorted by coach to Hardwick Hall.

Spend the afternoon at leisure, marvelling at the house and its grand interiors, discover the history of the house and its owners from the Countess of Shrewsbury (Bess of Hardwick) to the Cavendish family.

When the visit of the House is over, (free roaming with socal distancing) why not discover the ornate gardens or treat yourself to a light refreshment or visit the gift shop.

HARDWICK HALL

A spectacular Elizabethan house filled with rich furnishings and tapestries preserved by successive generations of the Devonshire family.

It was the formidable 'Bess of Hardwick' who first built the house and developed the surrounding estate in the late 1500s. Her descendants, the Dukes of Devonshire, treasured Hardwick, while lavishing much of their attention and money on nearby Chatsworth. Their success – intimately associated with empire over 400 years and across the globe – preserved  Hardwick, and their interests elsewhere saved it from significant alternation.

In the 20th century, keenly aware of Hardwick’s great significance and unique appeal, the Devonshires ensured that this remarkable building was passed on to the nation with its Elizabethan splendour intact.

THE COLLECTION

Uniquely among Elizabethan houses, Hardwick retains the textures of its original decoration - huge Flemish tapestries, Persian table-carpets, painted wall-hangings, coloured plaster friezes, inlaid furniture, rows of original portraits, and the finest collection of 16th and early 17th century needlework in the world. Many can still be identified in the detailed inventory that Bess had compiled in 1601.
