Gaze out the Northern Belle’s right hand window at the magnificent mountains of the Lake District, then turn to your left and look out over the sparkling North Sea towards the Isle of Man.
That’s the stunning prospect on our Cumbrian Coast Steam Special. along what many consider to be Britain’s most beautiful railway journey.
To make the day even more special, as you relax sipping a glass of champagne, the train will be hauled by a famous steam locomotive.
Your journey, as always, will begin by boarding over a red carpet before a smiling, liveried steward hands you the day’s first glass of champagne.
Then you will tuck into a delightful three-course brunch as a heritage diesel engine hauls the train on the first leg of its journey to Carnforth ready for steam locomotive to take over.
This station, of course, is where the classic black-and-white film Brief Encounter, starring Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson, was filmed.
You can still see the buffet where they met and the station clock, under which they exchanged that famous illicit kiss.
After Carnforth we have a short stop in Carlisle, with maybe just enough time to visit the medieval castle or the 12th century cathedral, before another champagne reception back on board.
Then as we head home in the evening, we serve a sumptuous six-course banquet with fine wine, rounded off with our famous Great British Cheese Board and a glass of port.
Look out for the Leven Viaduct, a third of mile long and dating back to 1863 during the 82-mile Cumbrian Coast route.
You’ll get a bird’s eye view of Morecambe Bay and, on a clear day, might just glimpse the Isle of Man in the distance.
Keep an eye open too, when passing Ravenglass, for narrow-gauge steam railway engines.

Steam haulage is not guaranteed and may be replaced by a heritage diesel locomotive in the event of dry conditions (due to fire risk from embers) or mechanical failure, as many steam engines are over 100 years old. The journey will still operate as planned regardless of the locomotive used.
If the trip is diesel-hauled, guests will receive a £30 credit per person, equivalent to the steam supplement. While this is unlikely, we believe in being transparent and will notify you by email as soon as possible should any changes occur.
Steam through some of Britain’s most beautiful scenery, the sea on one side and mountains on the other, as we skirt the Lake District. On a clear day, catch a glimpse of the Isle of Man as we pass Morecambe Bay.
