Steeped in tradition, Ladies’ Day at Royal Ascot is one of the most famous dates in the equestrian calendar – and also one of the most fashionable.
So not surprisingly, station platforms before the Northern Belle sets off for the Berkshire racetrack, inevitably resemble a fashion parade.
Peopls like to dress up for the occasion, causing an over-enthusiastic journalist to describe our Ascot trip one year as The Toffs’ Train. Well, we wouldn’t go that far, but our passengers certainly do look the bee’s knees.
In fact, we hold a competition for the best dressed woman and the best dressed couple with a bottle of champagne as the prize.
As always, passengers are welcomed aboard over a red carpet before being handed a sparkling Mimosa cocktail and settling down to a mouth-watering three-course brunch.
Once at Ascot, they are guided to the fabulous Queen Anne Enclosure, with access to the Parade Ring, the Grandstand and the Bandstand, where joyous singing takes place each day following the racing.
Later, passengers return to the train for another champagne reception before settling back in their plush armchairs to tuck into a sumptuous six-course dinner with fine wines during the leisurely journey home.
For many years a firm favourite with the late Queen Elizabeth, King Charles and Queen Camilla are now equally passionate about Royal Ascot.
Watch them arrive in their horsedrawn State Landeau as part of the Royal Parade with other members of the Royal Family. Then good luck with the bookies.
Please note that Royal Ascot’s dress code states gentlemen should wear a full-length suit and tie at all times, while ladies must have a hat or fascinator. Check the Ascot website for further details.
