The Flying Scotsman

A remarkable feat of engineering and a National Treasure. Originally build in Doncaster in 1923 and numbered 1472 this fabulous engine has captured the imagination of generations. In 1924 it was renumbered 4472 and renamed "Flying Scotsman" after the London to Edinburgh rail service. A double record breaker - this engine was the first to travel non stop from London to Edinburgh in 1928 and in 1934 the first to reach 100mph. After a colourful history and many changes in ownership the engine was lovingly and painstakingly restored by Riley & Son (E) Limited and is now a working exhibit at the National Rail Museum, York.

Note : This journey will be hauled by diesel on the outward journey and steam on the return.
